Abstract

Purpose

With the popularity of mobile devices and new technologies, such as NFC, mobile payment, which is taking the place of credit cards and cash as the chief payment method, is attracting more and more attention. Thus, this paper aims to investigate the main determinants of mobile payment use intention and proposes a model of mobile payment adoption, integrating mindfulness as a major factor.

Design/methodology/approach

Data for the study were collected through an online survey of a representative sample of 414 users in the United States and 380 in Spain. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to verify the validity of the variables and the relationships among them.

Findings

The results showed that mindfulness, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, subjective norms and attitude have significant influence on mobile payment use intention.

Research limitations/implications

The present study is based on samples from only the United States and Spain, which limits generalization of the results. The notion of mindfulness is new in mobile payment adoption research, so future studies should analyze in more detail and in depth its effect on these adoption processes.

Originality/value

This is the first study to incorporate mindfulness into a mobile payment adoption process. Incorporating mindfulness complements traditional variables to show how users address the adoption process (e.g. novelty seeking, engagement, anxiety, attention paid).

Abstract

Purpose

Topic model has been widely applied to discover important information from a vast amount of unstructured data. Traditional long-text topic models such as Latent Dirichlet Allocation may suffer from the sparsity problem when dealing with short texts, which mostly come from the Web. These models also exist the readability problem when displaying the discovered topics. The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel model called the Sense Unit based Phrase Topic Model (SenU-PTM) for both the sparsity and readability problems.

Design/methodology/approach

SenU-PTM is a novel phrase-based short-text topic model under a two-phase framework. The first phase introduces a phrase-generation algorithm by exploiting word embeddings, which aims to generate phrases with the original corpus. The second phase introduces a new concept of sense unit, which consists of a set of semantically similar tokens for modeling topics with token vectors generated in the first phase. Finally, SenU-PTM infers topics based on the above two phases.

Findings

Experimental results on two real-world and publicly available datasets show the effectiveness of SenU-PTM from the perspectives of topical quality and document characterization. It reveals that modeling topics on sense units can solve the sparsity of short texts and improve the readability of topics at the same time.

Originality/value

The originality of SenU-PTM lies in the new procedure of modeling topics on the proposed sense units with word embeddings for short-text topic discovery.

Abstract

Purpose

Although there have been considerable amounts of research documenting the effects of narcissism on workplace outcomes, studies of the impact of narcissism on job performance have produced inconclusive results. This study aims to provide insight into this issue by using a new model of narcissism, the Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry Concept model to explore the processes by which narcissism can impact job performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Two studies (Study 1 with 1,176 employees and 217 managers cross-sectional data; Study 2 with 209 employees and 39 managers time-lagged data) were conducted and multilevel technique was used to test the research model.

Findings

Narcissistic rivalry is associated with higher levels of family–work conflict (FWC) and that these effects are magnified when narcissists also have competing demands in the form of expectations to conform to traditional values. Furthermore, this study documents that higher levels of FWC are associated with greater emotional exhaustion and lower job performance. However, narcissistic admiration only has direct effect on job performance.

Originality/value

This paper not only suggests that narcissism is a previously untested dispositional antecedent for FWC, but it also uses a facet-based approach to examine when and how narcissism impacts job performance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate an intelligent control for water hydraulic position servo system which is intent to be used in remote control robot for fusion reactor. The dynamic model of water hydraulic servo control system is built and proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controller is used.

Design/methodology/approach

PID control is the most common control algorithm used in industry and has been a conventional tool used to operate closed-loop control system; however, it is very difficult to achieve high accuracy and fast response by using the traditional way to tune its perimeters. To improve the control performance, optimization algorithm can be applied to search the best parameters of PID. This paper presents a search algorithm using particle swarm with H2 control standards objective function to optimize PID parameters.

Findings

By comparing simulation and mock-up experiments’ results from different control methods, the particle swarm optimization algorithm presents better performance and is more effective for tuning PID parameters.

Originality/value

This paper presents an effective way to ensure safety and efficiency for remote handling maintenances of China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to find a method that has high precision to forecast the energy consumption of China’s manufacturing industry. The authors hope the predicted data can provide references to the formulation of government’s energy strategy and the sustained growth of economy in China.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the authors respectively make use of regression prediction model and grey system theory GM(1,1) model to construct single model based the data of 2001-2010, analyze the advantages and disadvantages of single prediction models. The authors use the data of 2011 and 2012 to test the model. Second, the authors propose combination forecasting model of manufacturing’s energy consumption in China by using standard variance to allocate the weight. Finally, this model is applied to forecast China’s manufacturing energy consumption during 2013-2016.

Findings

The result shows that the combination model is a better one with higher accuracy; the authors can take the model as an effective tool to predict manufacturing’s energy consumption in China. And the energy consumption of China’s manufacturing industry continued to show a steady incremental trend.

Originality/value

This method takes full advantages of the effective information reflected by the single model and improves the prediction accuracy.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between team heterogeneity and team performance in entrepreneurial team and is also of significance in guiding the management practice of an entrepreneurial team.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is carried out based on an experiment, in which a 2×2 experimental group is devised to collect data concerned with the heterogeneity of entrepreneurial team’s expertise and the attitude toward heterogeneity.

Findings

The entrepreneurial team’s heterogeneity has a significant effect on entrepreneurial performance; the entrepreneurial team’s heterogeneity influences entrepreneurial performance through team task conflict; attitudes toward heterogeneity play a mediating role in the above process.

Originality/value

This paper is carried out based on an experiment which can be used to determine the mediating effects of team conflict on the relationship between team expertise heterogeneity and the entrepreneurial performance.
